Binance: How to reset lost 2FA or Google Authenticator?
This guide will tell you what to do if you have lost 2FA or a smartphone with Google Authenticator application and thus can’t enter your Binance account. This isn’t a typical problem and most of the traders will never face it. But sometimes this happens.
First of all, don’t panic. If the account is really yours and if you have passed the KYC, you will be able to reset the 2FA by contacting support. But this may take time (2 - 4 days average). We recommend trying to recover the key without contacting support first. it will be much faster if you succeed.
Method 1: Recover the smartphone from Backup
Taking regular backups of the data on your smartphone is a very good practice. If your iPhone is lost, you will have to buy a new one sooner or later to recover all the data from the backup. You may visit the nearest store, purchase a new smartphone and restore the old data from backup. Your Google Authenticator app will also be there, and it will work. No extra actions will be required.
Method 2: Recover the Authenticator from Recovery Key
When you were configuring 2FA for the first time, Binance asked you to save a special Two-factor Authenticator recovery key. If you didn’t ignore this step you should have a recovery key somewhere. It may be stored as a text file with a key string, or as an image with a QR code. Try to find the key and recover your 2FA.
Step 1: Install Google Authenticator to any device. You may even use the Authenticator Chrome extension. Use our guide: How to register and activate Two-factor Authentication (2FA) on Binance for more details.
Step 2: Use the key to add Binance Exchange to the authenticator app.
Method 3: Contact the support
Binance support will always help you to get access to your account. Open a new support ticket here: https://binance.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and select “Help with Google Auth” in the dropdown list.
Describe your problem and attach a copy of your ID if you have passed the verification. This will help you to solve the problem faster.
The support should reply within 24-48 hours. If they don’t reply after 2 days you may try to fill another ticket or reach them in Telegram.
If you receive an automatic e-mail response, read the response carefully. Maybe you need to attach some more files. Read all the responses and follow the instructions there.
How to avoid the same mistake in the future?
- Don’t ignore Binance warnings. If the exchange tells you to save the Recovery Key in a safe place do it.
- Make regular backups of your smartphone if your Google Authenticator is installed there.
- You can start using the Authy application instead of Google Authenticator. Authy encryptes and stores your keys in a cloud for a faster and easy recovery.
Try to think about what you will do if you lose access to 2FA. If you see an easy solution, that’s good. If you don’t have an easy recovery plan – you should make it.
